DUBAI —Dubai has charged five Anna Hazare supporters under the UAE national security laws and rejected their bail applications on Thursday.
As reported by Khaleej Times earlier, the five Indians were held by Dubai Police for organising a walk to support the anti-corruption movement in India led by anti-graft activist Hazare without obtaining permission from the local authorities on Saturday.
Advocate Hashiq TK, who represented three of the accused, told Khaleej Times that the Dubai Public Prosecution rejected their bail pleas as the investigation into the case was not yet over.
“Preliminary investigation is not over and hence their bail applications were rejected on Thursday,” he said.
According to him, the men have been preliminarily charged with unlawful assembly, a serious offence under the UAE national security laws.
“However, the final charge sheet will be filed only after the investigations are over. This case is being considered on the basis of the facts and we are trying to prove that the intentions of the accused were not to threaten the security of the land or break the rules here. They just wanted to express their solidarity with the anti-corruption movement happening in India,” he said.
“But it is a lesson for others. They should know and respect the rules and laws of the land they live in,” he added.  The five men will now be behind bars for at least nine more days since all government offices including the courts will be closed due to the Eid holidays starting on Sunday.

They were detained by the police after one of them organised a three km walk in Al Mamzar Beach Park to express solidarity with Hazare who is on a hunger strike demanding a strong law to root out corruption in India.
